Harry’s Wine and Liquor

harrys@snet.net

For us here in southern New England, the time has come for that explosion of color throughout our woodlands.  With the cool (cold?) weather upon us, it’s time to light up the fireplace, get some rich stews simmering on the stove, carve the pumpkin for the front porch, and of course, stock up on a bunch of tummy-warming and soul-satisfying red wines.  With the staff here at Harry’s having just returned from the international wine trade show, VinExpo, in New York, we have discovered a bounty of new and old-favorite red wines at all price points to help make your autumn evenings and week-ends the stuff of a Collier and Ives decorative plate!  So join in with friends and family to enjoy a great bottle of wine, some wonderful food, and the warmth and friendship you share with each other.

Marques de Vargas Rioja Reserva 1998 – $19.99

From the bodega’s special vineyard “Hacianda de Pradelagar” comes this richly flavored and full-bodied Rioja.  With almost 24 months in brand new barrels from France, America, and Russia, this wine has the classic Rioja aroma of cherry and vanilla while the palate shows rich, berry-like flavors and a long finish.  Wonderful with braised lamb shanks.

Cesari Mara Vino de Ripasso 1999 - $12.99

Lovers of Italian Valpolicella wines will recognize the wine terminology Ripasso above.  A wine made in the Ripasso method is one that has undergone its initial alcoholic fermentation, but then has the lees (i.e., leftover skins, pulp, etc.) from a prior patch of Amarone wine added for another few weeks in order to gain more color, tannin, and complex flavors…. all of which this wine has.  Try it with a veal osso bucco.

Chateau de Flaugergues 2000 - $12.99

From the Languedoc, France comes this 80%/20% blend of Syrah and Grenache.  We quote Stephan Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar: “Red-ruby. Initially reticent nose hints at musky dark berries and brown spices with aeration. Fat, creamy, and deep; less evolved then the Selection but more voluminous. Lively acids still need to be absorbed. Finishes with mouth-dusting ripe tannins. (88+ points).”  Our food recommendation:  the cheese course!

Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny Port - $24.99

Warre’s Warrior Special Reserve Port - $12.99

And when you and your favorite person have moved from the dinner table to the roaring fireplace in the den, the evening will be complete with either a piece of dark chocolate along with the Warre’s or some walnuts with the Taylor Fladgate …. and the traditional Portuguese toast:  "Muito Obrigado e Adeus!"
