This by the way .. is "Finster & Elma" the webmaster's dogs.....

With the dog days of August upon us, the most enjoyable wines for the next few weeks will be those simple summer sippers called “quaffers.”  These are inexpensive, usually white (or rosé) wines that don’t call for much contemplation or discussion.  They are just required to be cold, refreshing, and tasty without a whole lot of complexity or depth.  Why…because it’s too hot and tiring (at least for this month) to discuss the virtues of oak barrels vs. stainless steel, valley-grown vs. mountainside fruit, sur lie aging vs. regular racking, and – well, you get the idea!  There will be plenty of time once September rolls around to enroll in a wine tasting class, attend a few local wine tasting dinners, and start making initial plans for next summer’s trip to Bordeaux, Tuscany, or Napa Valley.  So for now hop into that shaded hammock or poolside chaise lounge, pop the cork on a cold bottle of vino and quaff a little.  It’ll make the day feel just a little bit cooler.  Here are a few suggestions.

Domaine de Labarthe 2001 Gaillac - $8.99

This is a wonderfully dry wine that has very noticeable aromas of apple and pear and relatively low acidity that gives an impression of fat and roundness on the palate.

Cousino-Macul Dona Isidora Riesling 2001 - $7.99

Attractive aromas of mineral and white flowers are on the nose and there are flavors of apricot, peach, and orange marmalade.  Great to drink on its own or with spicy cuisine.

Quinta da Romeira Arinto 2000 - $7.99
This wine is greenish straw-colored with a perfumed nose and has a fresh tasting creamy texture that features bright lemony aromas and brisk apple-like flavors.

Chateau Jacquet Entre deux Mers blanc 2001 - $7.99

This blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 25% Muscadelle was aged in French oak for 12 months. It is aromatic with hints of lemon, pineapple, and grapefruit.

Chateau Saint Jean “Cuvee Natacha” Rosé 2001 - $7.99

The color of this rosé is a light pink, like strawberry soda.  The nose is bright with cherry/strawberry fruit and a touch of herb.  On the palate the fruit comes through along with an aspect of minerality, a taste of wet stones, and a fine defining acidity.
