Dad’s Favorite Things

With the summer season in full swing, the most probable place to find the man of the house (after the golf course or the hammock) is at the backyard barbecue grill.   Since prehistoric man first discovered fire, it has always been in guys’ genes to grab the long-handled fork and burn-up some meat over the coals.  When Fathers Day rolls around this month there will be legions of apron-clad, tong-wielding dads doing the honor for friends and family in the backyard.

According to the folks at Weber Grills, hamburgers, steak, hot dogs, and chicken breasts are the crowd favorites.  These entrees are found commonly in either a hickory-flavored or tomato-based marinade, and most likely accompanied with side dishes of roasted potatoes and steamed vegetable.  An All-American menu such as this calls for an assortment of some great wines from the U.S.A.

Basic burgers will match well with a tasty merlot such as Rabbit Ridge ($9.99), and hot dogs with all those spicy toppings scream out for a zinfandel by Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull ($9.99).  Depending on the marinade or coating on the chicken, you can try either a sauvignon blanc like Buena Vista ($7.99) with herbal-based flavors, or the Gallo of Sonoma Pinot Noir ($12.99 - yes, red wine with white meat, try it!) with a more spicy or earthy preparation.   That king of the grill, the New York strip steak, requires an equally majestic red wine so if you are looking for that special treat to give dad, try any of these selections.  They are all sure to please and impress.

Beringer Alluvium 1997 ($29.99)
Charles Krug Meritage Reserve 1997 ($32.49)
Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 ($50.99)

And to match up with those toasted marshmallows as the sun is setting, try a half-bottle dessert wine of Chateau Ste Michelle Late Harvest Riesling ($18.99).  It will be a very special treat for Dad to end his day.
