GREEN WINE...UGH!

No, this does not refer to green food coloring splashed into that shamrocksm2.gif (1387 bytes)everyday Kendall Jackson or fine Cakebread Chardonnay that you may be planning to enjoy on St Patrick's Day.  That combination truly is practiced only on the oceans of beer (fine and otherwise) that will be flowing on March 17.

In the world of fermented grapes there really is a wine called “green wine”.  The country is Portugal and the wine is Vinho Verde (pronounced brocksshamrtsm.gif (2578 bytes)"Veen-yo Vair-day").  It is so named because it is picked early, drunk young, and has a slightly biting or prickling quality and a refreshing twang.  The color is mainly yellow but does have a slightly greenish tinge to it. A couple of dependable and available producers are Aveleda, Casal Garcia, and Gatão,
all available at Harry’s Wine and Liquor in Fairfield.

Freshness is key for these inexpensive wines, so only buy the most recent shamrock2.gif (1561 bytes)vintage you can find which currently is 2000. A classic food match is shrimp scampi-style, pan-grilled with olive oil and lemon.   Who knows…this wine may even pair well with corned beef.
Try some and see for yourself.
