GREEN WINE...UGH!
by Len Gulino

No, this does not refer to green food
coloring splashed into that everyday
Kendall Jackson or fine Cakebread Chardonnay that you may be planning to enjoy on St
Patrick's Day. That combination truly is practiced only on the oceans of beer (fine
and otherwise) that will be flowing on March 17.
In the world of fermented grapes there
really is a wine called green wine. The country is Portugal and
the wine is Vinho Verde (pronounced "Veen-yo Vair-day"). It is so named
because it is picked early, drunk young, and has a slightly biting or prickling quality
and a refreshing twang. The color is mainly yellow but does have a slightly greenish
tinge to it. A couple of dependable and available producers are Aveleda, Casal Garcia, and
Gatão,
all available at Harrys Wine and Liquor in Fairfield.
Freshness is key for these inexpensive
wines, so only buy the most recent vintage you can find which currently is
2000. A classic food match is shrimp scampi-style, pan-grilled with olive oil and lemon.
Who knows
this wine may even pair well with corned beef.
Try some and see for yourself.
