Pleasantly nestled in the mountains and valleys of Litchfield County, Winsted, the central city area of Winchester Township, is known as the gateway to the Berkshire Mountains.  For visitors and residents, it offers a number of beautiful lakes, particularly Highland Lake with wonderful opportunities to fish, boat, swim and water ski.  At over three miles in length, Highland is one of the largest lakes in Connecticut. In addition, Campbell Falls is the focal point of a series of winding trails through verdant woodland, composed of many splashing cascades. It is a lovely area where visitors can fish, hike, and picnic. Winsted / Winchester is a “wide open town” in the sense that seventy seven percent of its 32 square miles is open land.  

In addition, Winsted is a historical architectural dream with a montage of stately Victorian, Greek Revival, Neo-Classical, Ecclesiastical, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival houses. But beyond that, Winsted’s completed Enhancement Plan includes a landscaped median on Main Street with picturesque lighting, and lined with inviting little shops for clothing, antiques as well as restaurants, including its own dinner movie theatre, a unique concept. And for children there is a skateboard park, a huge playscape park, ball fields, and mini golf with batting cages and go carts.  

Yet another development is the Still River Greenway project which will span approximately 2.5 miles in both Torrington and Winsted, allowing walkers, cyclists, joggers and inline skaters to tour the beautiful banks of the Still River. Visitors of the trail will be able to access the Still River Greenway directly from downtown Winsted and from Winsted Road in Torrington. An ideal place to visit or live if you love the out of doors and nature in general.
