For a distinctly small middle class suburb of Hartford, West Hartford can boast some distinctly unique cultural institutions.  The University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music for example, with its one hundred plus faculty members is a world class conservatory.  And within the Hartt School of Music is The Jazz Studies program, founded by American jazz saxophone great Jackie McLean. It is one of the nation's top programs in jazz studies. McLean, considered one of the top alto saxophonists in jazz history, grew up in Harlem and began his musical career at an early age. He worked with such jazz legends as Miles Davis while he was still a teenager, and became a protégé of the great Charlie Parker. He has garnered numerous national and international awards, including an American Jazz Master honor from the National Endowment for the Arts. Students have been constantly offered the opportunity to interact with well-known jazz artists and historians through special concerts, workshops and master classes with such artists as Pepper Adams, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Mingus, and Tito Puente. The Science Center of Connecticut is a bursting cornucopia of science and nature exhibits and programs.  With such a wonderfully dynamic array of features such as Conny the Whale, The Idea Zone (A Playground for the Mind), Kids’ Corner: Little Hands, Growing Minds, Planet Cyber: A Computer Adventure, and View Space - Images of the cosmos “beamed” into the Science Center, this science “joint” is certainly jumping! With this kind of action in a “bedroom” community, I would really find it hard to sleep.
