The Mansfield Huskies?  It doesn’t quite sound right.  Well, it is right, because Storrs, the home of UConn, or for you academics, The University of Connecticut, is only a village within the municipality of Mansfield.  Never mind the fact that the population of said university equals significantly more than half that of the town. Just how did the egg or rather basketball swallow the chicken?  After all, it’s bad enough that part of Mansfield made a non-academic transfer to Detroit. (America’s first silk mill was removed from Mansfield to the Henry Ford Museum.)     It all started in 1880 when two brothers, Charles and Augustus Storrs, presented a gift to the state of Connecticut. The bequest of 170 acres of farmland and a few barns became the Storrs Agricultural School, which over many years evolved into the University of Connecticut. UConn now embraces ten Schools and Colleges and it’s the top ranked public university in New England. But beyond stellar academics, UConn stands tall in its contributions to American vernacular culture particularly in having spearheaded the rise of woman’s basketball.  A visit to the Husky Heritage Sports Museum will bring you face to face with a life-size cutout of Husky All-American star Rebecca Lobo. And then right off of route 44, there’s Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry.  Just drop right in and visit an anything but life size version of Bill Cosby or Elvis who ready (just like Rebecca) to really move.
