What can
you say about a town whose first resident was a full blooded Native American
who married a white woman, and built an inland cabin that became known as
the “Barkhamsted Lighthouse?” (A turnpike eventually ran by the cabin whose
firelight shinning through the chinks provided welcome direction to stage
drivers!) What can you say? Actually quite a lot. This little
gem amongst the gems of Litchfield County seems to encapsulate what is
wonderful about both Northwest Connecticut and the Farmington River Valley.
Placed on the edge of both the Farmington River and the 3,000 acre People’s
State Forest, whose trails can bring you to views that are some of the best
in the state, Riverton has history, outdoors action, and blissful charm.
This town is both mountainous, as well as cut into deep valleys by the East
and West Branches of the Farmington. The foundation of this “Dry Land
Lighthouse” is still there, smack in the middle of a hiking trail in the
People’s State Forest and you can still stay at a destination to which it
led and that is the Old Riverton Inn. But if you would like to be as
close to the water as possible with out falling in, try the On The River Bed
and Breakfast. It is no surprise that this storybook town contains the
homestead (and home) of the well known children’s storybook writer and
illustrator, Mark Kimball Moulton. The perfect place for a “wide eyed
child at heart and a man of many smiles.” Wide-eyed child at heart and
a man of many smiles."
