There is a particularly illuminating viewpoint of Putnam that you could take beyond just visiting this scenic little town.  Just suppose you went high above Connecticut in a satellite at midnight.  What you would see of Putnam and its environs would be a corridor of darkness passing between the surrounding glow of cities and suburbs.  Putnam resides in Connecticut and South-Central Massachusetts’ “Last Green Valley” of fields and forests that lie within the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers and adjacent hills.  Actually, within that peaceful valley, Putnam is part of North-East Connecticut’s “Quiet Corner.” Like many former mill towns, Putnam is geologically defined by a river (the Quinebaug) running through its heart.  But today, downtown Putnam’s old buildings have come to life with a burgeoning antiques district. Nearby is Victoria’s Station Cafe, an elegant but very cozy coffee shop featuring tasty homemade pastries. Downtown Putnam is also home to the River Mills Heritage Trail, a one mile walk (or bike) that passes by six historic mills as well as several very picturesque dams and falls.  Walkers can also view the Victorian Morse Mansion, one of a number of Putnam’s grand industrial era homes. Another architectural classic in Putnam is a none other than a boxcar.  This is the Boxcar Museum, a tribute to the Putnam children’s writer, Gertrude Warner.  Warner, who also taught school in Putnam, created the very popular Boxcar Children’s Mysteries and this little museum contains mementos of this remarkable woman’s life and career.
