If you are traveling up
the Route 7 “Antique Highway” or hiking on the Connecticut portion of the
Appalachian Trail, one of the most beautiful places to escape from your
escape is the village of Kent, the site of Kent Falls. Kent Falls is not
massive (like the slightly larger Yosemite in California) but, like our
state in general, is smaller and charmier, a series of cascades on a
mountain stream, Falls Brook. It does have a climax where the waters
plummet some seventy feet, and then enter the Housatonic River two hundred
feet downstream. But beyond merely falling, the water has carved
interesting shapes and potholes into the limestone through which it flows.
If the rustic scenery
gives you a sense of déjà vu, it may be because you may have seen it in the
numerous TV and magazine advertisements that have been shot there. But
actual experience is distinctly un- commercial to be sure, in fact its
beauties as artistic inspiration were first discovered by the American
Impressionists and it is a stop on the American Impressionist Art Trail. If
you want water that is level and still, you can stay right in Kent and take
in the vibrant panoramic setting of Lake Waramaug. If it’s déjà vu all
over again, especially in the fall, the entrancing reflected foliage has
been the beloved object of many a photographer, professional or
otherwise. But don’t stop there. The 2,300-acre Macedonia Brook State Park
is another geological creation whose trails, passing both springs and
streams, will take you up to the peak of Cobble Mountain with exceptional
westward outlooks of the Catskill and Taconic Mountains. If it should happen
to rain, you can still feast your eyes in one of Kent’s seven art galleries,
or feast your palate at the Belgigue Salon de Thé, the Bulls Bridge Inn,
Fife'n Drum Restaurant, or the Restaurant Moosilauke.
Kent is easy to get to and
hard to get away from.
