In 1973, Bloomfield, Connecticut was named an
All-American City. Why?
Although all of the communities surrounding
Hartford had expanded their populations during the post World War II period,
Bloomfield’s growth rate of two hundred and twenty per cent topped all the
others by a wide margin. But more importantly, the award recognized
Bloomfield’s success as an ethnically and culturally diverse community.
Bloomfield’s growth as a place with a high quality of life attracted
commuters to nearby Hartford, but these attributes at the same time brought
insurance companies, aerospace producers, specialized tool makers,
electronics companies, gold and diamond businesses to Bloomfield. With
this community, success truly bread success.
But cutting edge growth seemed to come naturally to Bloomfield. Within
thirty years of its incorporation in 1835, Bloomfield’s new rail service
included eight trains daily to and from Hartford, and was serviced by four
stations in Town. In 1891, the Hartford Electric Light Company brought
Bloomfield into the twentieth century nine years before that century began!
Bloomfield’s largest and most unique industry is the Kamen Aircraft
Corporation. Charles Kamen, one of the true wizards of American
Invention profoundly changed the course of helicopter design by creating a
workable jet turbine engine, which made the helicopter safer, more reliable
and easier to maintain, and greatly enhanced performance. This creative
mastermind initiated the use of a synchropter with counter-rotating blades
thus eliminating torque and omitting the need for a tail rotor that
contributed nothing to lifting the helicopter but only robbed engine power
from the main rotors. Kamen then utilized his unique knowledge of vibration
to invent the first guitar made of synthetic materials and containing a
built in electronic pickup. This was the now ubiquitous Ovation Guitar!
All-American City, why not?
