The Arrigoni
Bridge 1933
Portland,
CT sitting on the bend of the
Connecticut River at the mid point
between New York and Boston is a
quiet little Yankee Village. The Wangunk
Indians, the original inhabitants of
this town, were were named that
from the word Wangunk, meaning "Great
Bend". The scenic Brownstone
Quarries which are located just off of
Main St. had once employed 1500 workers
in the 1850's, but as the market for
brownstone declined at the turn of the
20th and in 1936 the river flooded into
the quarry the brownstone industry was
coming to an end. The quarries are
now a Historical Landmark. There
are still many examples of this
architecture in Portland, some of them
being the old Town Hall on Main Street
and the Civil War Monument on the corner
of Bartlett and Main St. Tobacco
farming was also a major industry in
Portland.
