Meriden, Ct. in New Haven County was
originally a farm owned by Jonathan Gillbert who in 1961 was granted a land
settlement for a farm near Cold Spring. Evidence the Quinnipiac and Mattabasset
tribes for thousands of years prior to this is sometimes still unearthered in
the form of arrowheads and artifacts. Meriden was was situated halfway between
the Connecticut Colony on the North and the New Haven County on the South in the
1600 & 1700's. The house built by Soloman Goffe in 1711 is the oldest house in
town and is now a Museum on North Colony Road. The Meetinghouse built in 1727 is
now located of Ann Street and Dryden Drive. In May of 1806 Meriden was
recognized as a town and in 1867 was incorporated as a city. The downtown area
has undergone a facelift and many corporate headquarters have located on
Research Parkway.
