We at The Megasite Guide to Dining have a special place in our hearts
for these historic beauties. There are no words to express the feeling
which overcomes you if you have been fortunate enough to visit any of
these homes. The amount of beauty in one room is overwhelming, never
mind that one room is possible as big as some of our houses! We all have
an appreciation for how hard it is to make a dollar these days. It is
inconceivable how much it would cost to rebuild any one of these
historic mansions that survive in the United States today. As these were
all originally someone's home we can appreciate the tremendous amount of
love, care and needless to say money was, and still is needed for the
maintenance of these historic giants. Few of these mansions are now
owned by any of the original families, due to the change in taxation and
the huge amount of cost to maintain them. The Historical Societies work
feverishly to preserve these mansions through contributions and
donations.
