Jeremiah Donovan's of Historic South Norwalk was established in 1889 and has been a popular spot for food ever since. For 109 years, Donovan's has been sitting comfortably on the corner of Washington and Water Street. It is a favorite place to meet old friends and make new ones.... serving the public with its charming and authentic saloon ambience.
The collection of vintage prizefighter pictures lining the walls belonged to "Battling Bat Kunz", a regional champ who owned the bar for a couple of decades and catered to ring personalities throughout his tenure.
For a brief time in the Prohibition Era, Donovan's served as the neighborhood A&P. Rumor has it that bootleg booze was available in the back room! Jeremiah's career took him from successful saloon keeper to distinguished member of the U.S. House of Representatives, including a stint as Mayor of Norwalk on his way up the political ladder. Donovan's was second home to local Democrats during its colorful history, including a number of presidential candidates " taking a break" while making their stomp through New England.
Current owners, Richard and Patti Ball restored the bar in 1979 to its original Victorian style. Washington Street, at that time, was a far different venue than the restored "Victorian Look" that you witness today. Thanks to private and public funding, the area which was destined for the wrecking ball in the late 70's became an early 80's New England urban showplace. The successful Washington Street " rebirth" prompted millions of dollars of additional development in the surrounding area... The Maritime Center being the most outstanding example, attracting thousands of tourists annually to South Norwalk.
