United States > Connecticut > Torrington

Torrington is unique in Connecticut's northwest Litchfield County. As the county's largest city, it straddles both the industrial Naugatuck River Valley and the rural Litchfield hills and woodlands making Torrington the industrial and commercial hub of Northwest Connecticut. Near the headwaters of Connecticut's largest "in state” river, Torrington was the northern outpost of that river valley's mill industry. When brass buttons came into vogue in the late 18th century, they became the first products of the brass industry in this area, which eventually supplied eighty five percent of America's brass.

But in recent years, Torrington has become an outstanding cultural center anchored by two vibrant institutions, the Warner Theatre and the Nutmeg Conservatory. Standing side by side in newly restored facilities, they are architectural centerpieces in the historic Main Street district.

Built by Warner Brother's studios in 1931, the Warner, with its murals of Litchfield County sites, striking art deco designs, and a splendid star shaped chandelier, was described as "Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre.” After its restoration in 1983, it has thrived with an exciting mixture of theatrical, musical and dance productions.

The Conservatory is the home of the Nutmeg Ballet and dance school, which presents year round dance programs of such high quality that a New York Times review of "A Jubilee Celebration: Eleanor D'Antuono 50 Years of Dance,” praised the program with such statements as, "…truly dazzling performance...with Gillian Murphy, almost frightening in her pyrotechnical daring and aplomb...”

But wait, I haven't even mentioned the Artwell Gallery, The Trinity Arts Series, the Torrington Civic Symphony, the Chorus Angelicus professional children's choir, the Torrington Feis (a 400 dancer Irish festival), "Jazz in the Park,” and the "Torrington Arts Festival.” All of the above create a year round flurry of arts activity which is truly remarkable for a city of only 35,000 people.
