United States > Connecticut > Norfolk

Norfolk, as the town with the highest elevation in Connecticut, doesn't have to do much to justify its nickname as "Connecticut's Icebox." Except for North Cannon, it is the most northwest town in the state's northwest region. With over eighty six percent open land Norfolk is as country as you can get. Norfolk is in the heart of the Green Woods where outdoor enthusiasts can Canoe, Fly Fish, or Raft on the Farmington, Housatonic, or Mad Rivers, as well as walk over miles of hiking trails.

But during the summer, the music isn't country at all. The Stoeckel Estate's Music Shed is where the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Yale Summer School of Music will celebrate its 100th birthday. The Music Shed, built in 1906, several years after the Stoekel's began concerts in their thirty five room mansion, is noted for its glorious acoustics. The softest notes can be heard with pristine clarity at the back of the shed. The Norfolk celebration begins with a Gala Concert on Saturday, June 10th, 2006 with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, followed by a summer long series of concerts by world class chamber groups taking the same stage where such celebrated musicians as Fritz Kreisler, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Jean Sibelius have performed. Streamside picnics and walks over the estate's 70 acres of gently sloping hills and gardens are a summer tradition.

The concerts and scenery are ample reason it itself to travel off Litchfield County's beaten path but vineyards, the Greenwood Theatre and easy access to Massachusetts's Berkshire Mountains are additional reasons to visit this classic New England village.
