United States > Connecticut > Litchfield

"A town of hard, active, reading, thinking, intelligent men who may probably be set forth as a pattern of the finest community on earth.”

"A delightful village on a fruitful hill richly endowed with schools both professional and scientific.”

These two quotations described the town of Litchfield during its "golden age” (The fifty years between 1784 and 1834) when its fortuitous location, which had made it a "safe town” far from the river and seacoast towns under constant attack by British during the Revolutionary War, allowed it to develop into a vigorous, expanding center. By the1790's the Litchfield had become the leading commercial, social, cultural and legal center of Northwestern Connecticut. It had an active artisan community with goldsmiths, hatters, carriage makers, cabinet makers, saddlers, blacksmiths, potters and other craftsmen all located within the central village. There was even the Litchfield Law School developed by a man name Tapping Reeve that eventually graduated 1,500 men.

Fast forward to the twenty first century and we find that Litchfield is still a "delightful village” with "active, reading, thinking, intelligent men” AND women, many of them artists, artisans and craftspeople and musicians. One of them is Paul Winter whose studio and record company are located here. Nationally celebrated as one of the most beautiful towns in America, Litchfield is considered to be one of New England's finest existing examples of a typical 18th century New England settlement. With a host of quality restaurants, situated in an area known for its fine bed and breakfasts and antique stores as well as cultural events such as the Litchfield Jazz Festival, Project Poetry Live! and the Belsky Piano Competition, Litchfield puts together in one package all that is great about New England.
