Lifeguards are on duty for swimming from mid-June through Labor Day. Point Au Roche State Park on the northwestern shore of Lake Champlain, is a mixture of open and forested areas, most of them natural and undeveloped. The park's large day-use area has a protected sandy beach, picnic facilities and concession stand. Boating and fishing are popular activities, as are volleyball, softball, and other games. The staffed Nature Center offers a variety of programs open to the public all year. The park's trails, including nature, hiking, and biking trails, wind through interesting habitats, from forest to marsh to shoreline. The trails are in use all year for school programs, nature hikes and cross-country skiing. The park also provides access for ice fishing.

Surrounded by state land, the park has a wilderness atmosphere. Visitors can swim in man-made Davis Pond, use non-motorized boats and fish in the pond or the Salmon River. The park has wooded campsites, playing fields, a picnic area, a self-guided nature trail and a hiking trail. Winter activities included ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

Long before the Revolution, the British and the French both claimed Crown Point in the struggle for a North American empire. Four failed campaigns to oust the French between 1755 and 1758 were mounted by the British. It was not until 1759, however, that the abandoned French Fort St. Frederic was taken over by the British. The British immediately began construction of "His Majesty's Fort of Crown Point". This extremely ambitious fortification complex contributed to the British conquest of Canada, the last French stronghold and control of Lake Champlain as a communication highway. In 1775, at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the rebellious colonists captured the fort and secured sorely needed cannons and heavy ordnance. Crown Point was occupied by General John Burgoyne's army in 1777 after the American evacuation to Mount Independence and remained under British control until the end of the war. The ruins of Fort St. Frederic, "His Majesty's Fort of Crown Point", and surrounding lands were purchased by the State of New York in 1910. Guests can see the ruins of the original 18th-century structures and in the Visitor Center, view exhibits that interpret the French, British, and American chapters of Crown Point's history.

About 12 miles north of Plattsburgh, the Miner Museum was created by Alice Miner, the wife of railroad industrialist William Miner, in 1924. The 15 rooms in the museum are filled with period and miniature furniture, a vast collection of china, porcelain and glass, and a superb collection of textiles. The focus is on 18th and 19th century materials.

Fortunately, Fort Chambly withstood the upheavals of the history of New France. It stands as an invaluable witness to the French presence in North America. Restored in 1983, exhibitions recounting key moments in New France are now presented within its walls.

Erected between 1819 and 1829, the fort consists of defense works and a number of stonework buildings of outstanding beauty. The complex was designed to protect the colony in the event of an American invasion by way of the Richelieu River. As you tour the barracks, guardroom, powder magazine, prison and officers' quarters, you will be immersed in the day-to-day lives of the soldiers and their families. You will be struck by the stark condition they had to endure. You'll discover the fascinating world of a 19th-century British garrison.
  • Fort Ticonderoga

    • Ticonderoga, NY 518-585-2821 May through October In the early history of North America, a stone fort overlooking Lake Champlain served as an important military base in the struggle between the British and French for control of the region. Fort Ticonderoga, originally named Fort Carillon by the French in 1755 when it was built, was the site of numerous famous battles. In 1759, Lord Jeffery Amherst captured the site from the Marquis de Montcalm. The fort remained under British control until Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys from Vermont caught the British by surprise and captured the fort. In 1908 restoration on the fort began, making Fort Ticnderoga the nation's first restored historical museum. Today the fort is a lively place, where every attempt is made to bring history to life. This little fact makes it particularly attractive to families with children, as the museum offers more than just static displays. Black-powder rifles and cannon-fire drills, fife-and-drum rolls, encampments and re-enactment of battles are all part of the schedule of events. Exhibits within the fort offer artifacts of the battles of the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution.

The SUNY Plattsburgh Art Museum, with a collection of more than 4,500 works, is one of those hidden gems that often is missed by locals and visitors alike. The museum facilities are spread throughout the campus. The primary galleries are in the Myers Fine Arts Building and in the Feinberg Library, which houses an extensive collection of paintings, drawings, prints, books and ephemera of the late American artist Rockwell Kent and much of the college?s permanent art collection. Asian, 19th and 20th century prints, sculptures, and paintings and a photography collection also are housed in various sections of the library.

This museum and "hands-on" working farm recreates life in the 19th century. Unlike other museums in which exhibits are for viewing only, the implements at the Homestead are meant to be handled. visitors may try candle-making or hearth cooking or watch demonstrations in blacksmithing, spinning, quilting or other crafts. The museum includes a farmhouse, barn, and schoolhouse. Children may help tend to the chickens, sheep, pigs, and oxen on the farm. There is a self-guided nature trail along the shore of Long Lake. The museum offers some unique seasonal activities, including cider-making, maple sugaring, a pioneer Thanksgiving and caroling party, its world-famous "pig walk" and various craft workshops.

The last 5 miles are the most spectacular, as the road winds upward through a changing forest and an alpine summit environment. At the summit parking area, there is a short hike or an elevator ride to the top of the mountain, where you'll have a 360-degree view of the surrounding wilderness. On a clear day, you can see Montreal and the Green Mountains of Vermont. It is always best to call for visibility conditions.

The Battle of Plattsburgh was the culminating event in 1814 in a century of warfare on Lake Champlain. In this small museum, in the heart of Plattsburgh, the area's history - from the earliest settlers in 1600 to the present - is recorded in paintings, maps, furniture, decorative arts and artifacts. Many archeological discoveries recovered from Lake Champlain highlight the many naval battles on its waters.
  • Penfield Homestead Museum

What is significant about Allen Penfield switching on an electromagnet to help him in his process of iron ore separation in 1831? And who, you ask, is Allen Penfield anyway? His name may be lost to many history books, but his action was the world's first industrial application of electricity. (Will the answer ever appear on Jeopardy?). The museum preserves his legacy, along with an extensive collection of Civil War artifacts and equipment used in the iron industry. Its 550-acre site includes ruins of iron works.
  • Lake Champlain Underwater Historical Preserve

    • Lake Champlain is a diver's paradise, offering all of the underwater beauty of one of the world's most interesting lakes as well as one of America's greatest collections of shipwrecks, dating back to the American Revolution. The Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve provides controlled access to several of these sites. A seasonal registration is required for the Preserve. Local diving services can provide more information on the wonders of Lake Champlain, as well as equipment and instruction.
